When Beanie was a baby, I used to start feeling incredibly anxious at around 4pm every day. The reason? Bath time. When he was younger, I used to bath him at 5 o’ clock every evening, which consisted of a lot of screaming (from him) and crying (from me).
This continued for months and months… Bean simply did not like bath time. Fortunately, things are a whole lot different these days. He absolutely loves spending time in the bath and would happily splash around for a good hour – probably two – if left to his own devices, so you can imagine his excitement when he received the AcornKids KidsBox in the mail a couple of months ago.
This little box is brimming with an assortment of fun, educational and textural bath time toys that will keep your littlie busy for ages – in fact, I can almost guarantee that there’ll be tears when it’s time to hop out of the bath; something I learnt from personal experience! (Ha – look at how far Beanie’s come!)
Every month, the team at Acorn Kids puts together a fun-filled box featuring between four to six of their best-selling products, which is then delivered directly to your front door. Each box costs R199 or R229 (depending on your delivery preference), and the bath time toys contained in each box are suitable for kiddies older than three, although I can’t see why babies as little as one wouldn’t enjoy these toys, too. I’ve been buying Beanie the AcornKids Bath Pops (R20,50 per packet containing 8 capsules) for years and he’s always enjoyed watching them dissolve in the bath and seeing which animal or shape will emerge from the little capsule this time, and I can imagine that the Soap Putty and the Squish and Squeeze Jelly Bubbles would be a huge hit among younger babies, too.
Our box was crammed some amazing bath toys, including the Soap Putty, Jelly Putty and Bath Pops mentioned above, but by far our most-used and best-loved toy from this specific box was the set of Funky Faces Bath Time Foam Stickers (R99). The pack contains 2 faces with 43 parts that can be used to make loads of funny face combinations. The foam stickers are super-hardy and durable, and Beanie still plays with them almost every night, almost three months on. (Confession time: I often find myself creating funky faces while I’m relaxing in the bath, even without Beanie!)
My favourite ‘toy’ of the lot is quite possibly the Squish and Squeeze Jelly Bubbles (R41 each), which is a bright, bubbling jelly that smells absolutely delicious. Beanie loved squishing the jelly and breaking it up into bits before squeezing it between his fingers – such a fun, tactile activity, that also creates mounds of bubbles in the bath (simply whisk the water for a foaming effect). The Jelly Bubbles are available in three different colours (red, blue and yellow), and I found that cutting it up into bits is a great way to make your Jelly Bubbles last. We cut ours up into three equal pieces, and Bean still had loads of bubbles to play in.
The Soap Putty (R41 each) was so much fun to play with! It’s like play dough, so you can roll it up into little balls, spread it out flat and create all sorts of fun shapes with it – and then you can use it to wash your kiddie’s body! It’s 100% soap-free and contains sweet almond oil and glycerin to moisturise, with china clay to help hold it’s shape, and I found that it’s really gentle on the skin. It comes in four different colours (we received a purple putty, but I see on their website that they offer red, blue, yellow and green putty, so this must’ve been a limited edition putty), and the putty is housed in an acorn-shaped container (so you can store it away after use until the next bath time) and a cookie cutter.
The box also contained four bright and colourful foam sheets with the the alphabet, which have come in handy in recent weeks as Beanie has started learning about the alphabet at playschool. It also contained a surprise gift, which was this bottle of AcornKids Buzz Off Cream (R59), a natural (and really effective, I found) insect repellant cream. Ingredients include citronella oil, lavender, eucalyptus, geranium, lemon and peppermint, as well as a little dash of cinnamon extract, and it’s a lovely, lightweight cream that is easily absorbed and left Beanie’s skin feel both moisturised and protected against nasty little critters.
When you add it all up, you’ll see that the value of the box I received is around R260, but the AcornKids KidsBox costs only R199 (with postal delivery) or R229 (with courier delivery) per month, so it actually saves you money – plus there’s nothing better than seeing your littlie’s excitement when they receive a parcel in the mail that’s just for them. Beanie absolutely loved his box, from the very moment the courier delivered ours, and even to this day – the Funky Faces are by far the best bath toy we own (and we own plenty), as they’re our most-used bath time activity.
