Although it’s technically autumn here in the Southern Hemisphere, you wouldn’t say it given the weather in most parts of the Western Cape in recent weeks. Fortunately, we’ve had the occasional (much-needed) rainy day, but it’s been pretty hot for the most part, with temperatures reaching up to 40 degrees Celsius on several occasions.
The thing that bothers me most about the mid-summer heat? The effects on my skin. My skin does not cope well with soaring temperatures, and I often battle with the dreaded midday shine, breakouts, and dark spots that develop as a result of sun exposure. Apparently, I’m not alone in this – I recently read that one in every two women complains of shiny skin as a result of heat or stress, so I’m relieved to know that I’m not the only one!
Excess sebum is the biggest culprit behind shiny skin, and spending time in the sun often exacerbates the production of sebum. UV rays often cause more sebum to be excreted, and the heat further dilates your pores, making them look bigger and allowing sebum to be transported more easily – resulting in shinier skin. And don’t forget sweat! The mixture of sweat and sebum often results in super-shiny skin and melting makeup – not a pretty look!
I recently received a few new products from Vichy, and I couldn’t believe my luck when I opened the package – it was as though Vichy had read my mind and sent the perfect products to tackle all my current skincare concerns – shininess included! Of the three products I received, I was most excited to try Vichy NormaDerm Skin Balance Aqua Gel (R225), a day cream with a refreshing gel texture that’s ideal for women with oily skin types – or for those who battle with recurring midday shine and large pores, like me!
I’ve been keeping my tube in the fridge, especially on hot days – applying the cool, soothing gel to my skin after cleansing every morning is such a treat, and I find that the Vichy NormaDerm Skin Balance Aqua Gel leaves my skin feeling instantly hydrated, but it also has a mattifying effect. (It can be so tempting to ditch the moisturiser when you have an oily skin type, but this is quite possibly the worst thing you could do; your skin will end up producing even more sebum in an effort to quench the dryness caused by a lack of moisture, resulting in an even oilier skin – and more breakouts). Vichy NormaDerm Skin Balance Aqua Gel is said to reduce oiliness and shine, and it also helps to tighten pores. I find that there is an immediate mattifying effect that lasts well into the day, and my foundation doesn’t require any touch ups on the days that I’ve used the Aqua Gel.
A skincare product that I absolutely refuse to go without? A good sunscreen, of course! I’ve been using NEW Vichy Ideal Soleil Anti-Imperfections Anti-Blemishes Mattifying Corrective Care SPF30 (R285) for the past month, and I love it! I’m a real sucker when it comes to the sensorial pleasure of using a product, so if it applies beautifully and smells pleasant, I’m just about sold. This new beauty from Vichy does both: it boasts a lightweight, easily-absorbed texture that isn’t sticky in the slightest, and it smells so fresh – no tell-tale sunscreen scent, and absolutely no chalky, white residue. I apply this daily after I’ve applied the Vichy NormaDerm Skin Balance Aqua Gel, and my foundation glides on smoothly and evenly over the top of both – a real bonus for makeup lovers! I’ve been to many sun care presentations by leading brands and dermatologists, and I’ve often heard the saying that ‘the best sunscreen is the one you’ll actually use‘ – and Vichy Ideal Soleil Anti-Imperfections Anti-Blemishes Mattifying Corrective Care SPF30 (wow, such a mouthful!) definitely makes the cut, for this reason, and for so many more. In a nutshell?
- It boasts a triple anti-blemish action, making it ideal for those of us who suffer from spots, large pores, and greasiness or shine.
- In fact, it’s been tested specifically on acne-prone skin types, and it’s been proven that blemishes and imperfections are diminished with regular use.
- It also has a mattifying effect for up to 9 hours of no shine.
- It boasts a hypoallergenic formula, so it’s ideal for use on sensitive skins.
- It corrects spots and helps to minimise large pores, while preventing the appearance of dark spots at the same time.
- And, of course, it boasts broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection, with an SPF of 30.
- It’s ideal for daily use, and sits incredibly well under makeup.
And now, time for quite possibly my favourite product of the bunch! I’ve never been one to sing the praises of facial waters and spritzes, but I have become absolutely obsessed with them in recent months. I literally own about seven different facial waters, and I love them all – I find that each one is great for it’s own specific purpose, and I’ve found that they definitely do make a difference when used regularly (and for me, regularly means about five or six – or more! – times per day!)
Vichy Eau Thermale Thermal Spa Water (R169) is the first facial water that I discovered, about five or six years ago, and I make sure that there’s at least one bottle in my fridge (or in my travel bag) at all times during the summer months. I spray this onto freshly cleansed skin before applying my moisturiser to help lock in hydration, and I also spray it onto my skin after rinsing off a mask and before applying my moisturiser. I carry it around in my handbag on family day trips or longer road trips to refresh my skin when it’s hot, and I often spritz some on Beanie’s face or hands before wiping down with a cloth to give him a quick clean when we’re out and about. There are just so many uses for this wonder product!
But apart from providing your skin with some much-needed moisture and a quick, refreshing boost, Vichy Eau Thermale Thermal Spa Water actually boasts some incredible benefits for your skin. To start with, it contains 15 minerals that serve to strengthen the skin’s natural moisture barrier function, helping to protect the skin against harmful external aggressors, like sun, pollution, and stress. It’s ideal for use on sensitive skins to help soothe skin and to calm any irritation or inflammation, and it also helps to provide a much-needed moisture boost for dry and dehydrated skin types.
I’ve had so many readers write to me in recent months to ask for recommendations for skincare products that are best suited to oily to combination skin types, and I think these products are ideal. They’re effective and they’re backed by science, and they’re also very reasonably priced – tick, tick and TICK!
