After a ridiculously busy Saturday (think one event, two baby showers, and a 40th birthday party), I was more than ready for a slow and simple day yesterday. To tell you the truth, I would’ve loved nothing more than to stay in bed watching series all day, but Beanie was bouncing off the walls, so we decided that a quick stroll around Vergelegen Wine Estate was in order.
We walked through the forest, collected some acorns, admired the rose garden, and got friendly with the local peacock and peahen… and I thought that it was the perfect time to try and get some shots of my most beloved bracelet, which was an early Mother’s Day gift from Janine Binneman Jewellery Design.
If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you might remember this super-special necklace that Beanie ‘designed’ (that was brought to life by Janine Binneman Jewellery Design), which has since become my go-to piece of jewellery for everyday wear. This is quite a feat in itself, as I’ve never been much of a jewellery person to begin with… but I’ve since discovered that I actually am a jewellery lover; it’s just that there have been very few pieces that have actually meant something to me. I think that’s why I’ve developed such a love for local jewellery designer, Janine Binneman’s masterpieces over the past year or so. Janine and her incredibly talented team create some of the most exquisite one-of-a-kind pieces using beautiful gems and precious stones, and she also has a beautiful range of ready-to-wear pieces that are on-trend, easy on the pocket, and make the most spectacular gifts.
Case in point? This stirling silver hand-engraved bangle, which is usually engraved to read ‘she believed she could, so she did‘. Although I find this particular phrase to be incredibly inspiring, I wanted something that was meaningful to me personally, so I opted to have the words ‘de tout mon couer‘ (‘with all my heart’ in French) engraved on mine. These particular words have stayed with me since I first read them in a dedication in one of my setworks while studying English at university. The book in question was Woman Hollering Creek by Sandra Cisneros, and the original dedication was in Spanish. The book had a huge impact on me and my beliefs surrounding femininity and what it means to be a woman. I loved the way the words in the book’s dedication (written in both English and Spanish) flowed, but I loved them even more once I understood what they meant, and what Cisneros meant by them. For years, I had the idea to have a phrase from the dedication (‘con todo mi corazon’ – with all my heart) tattooed on my skin, to remind me of my time at university, and to serve as a reminder to do everything I put my mind to with all my heart.
To have Spanish words inked on my body didn’t make much sense to me though, as I don’t understand a word of Spanish. French, on the other hand… I first learnt French when I picked it up as a subject choice in grade eight, and I even studied French for a year while at varsity, so it made complete sense (to me, at least) to have the phrase translated into French. Long story short, I have the words ‘de tout mon couer‘ tattoeed on my left rib, as a constant reminder to follow my passion and to approach everything in life – whether my job, this blog, my relationships, or motherhood – with all my heart.
Janine’s team did a beautiful job of delicately engraving these meaningful words onto a bangle for me, along with both my husband and Beanie’s names on the other side. It is so exquisite and so incredibly delicate, that I battled to get a photograph that truly captures the pure magic of this bangle… but I think that these give you an idea?
If you’re still looking for a Mother’s Day gift (or even if you have a special birthday or anniversary coming up), this is by far one of the most meaningful gifts you could give – or receive (hint, hint)! Each stirling silver bangle is hand-engraved, and you can opt to have ‘she believed she could, so she did‘ engraved on yours, or you can alter the wording and choose something else entirely, as I did. (Due to space constraints, you’ll need to keep this down to nine short words). Each bangle costs between R650 to R750, and it’s available in either 65mm or 75mm diameter.
If you’re not completely sold on the bangle, you have to check out Janine’s infamous name ring stacks (here – scroll down to build your own), or have one of your kids’ drawings turned into a necklace. Three perfect Mother’s Day gift ideas right there, don’t you think? Since Mother’s Day is now less than a week away, you’ll have to hurry to get your order in – Mother’s Day orders close on 10 May 2017. Go, go, go!
