I’ve worn Thierry Mugler’s Angel for as long as I can remember. In fact, it’s the very first fragrance I ever purchased for myself, and I even wore it on my wedding day. I would even go so far as to say that Angel is my signature scent… so you can imagine my delight when I found out that Thierry Mugler’s fragrances are refillable!
Yep, you read that right: you can pop by your nearest Thierry Mugler fragrance counter and have your empty cut-glass perfume bottle refilled directly at the Mugler Source. This may seem like a relatively new concept, but the Mugler Source has actually been around since 1992 and was inspired by the tradition of perfume fountains that was born in the 18th century (it’s said that Marie Antoinette herself had her very own perfume fountain). Back then, perfume bottles were often designed by renowned crystal engravers and they became precious keepsakes that women would hold on to for life, returning to the perfumer to have their bottles refilled with their original fragrance time and time again. This service was reserved for a select few, and the process was an incredibly luxurious experience. Now, Thierry Mugler allows loyal fans the opportunity to relive this magical experience… all the while saving money (refilling your bottle is far more economical than purchasing a brand-new bottle), and showing enormous respect to the environment at the same time.
I have a bit of an obsession with fragrances and go through perfumes at a ridiculous rate, and I always struggle with what to do with my empty fragrance bottles once I’ve spritzed the last spritz. Although I typically end up hoarding my empty fragrance bottles at the back of my beauty cupboard, I’ve never really stopped to think about the harmful effects that the manufacturing process of perfume bottles and packaging has on the environment – until now, that is. Have you ever considered the kind of impact that mass consumerism has on the environment? Just think about all the waste created during the manufacturing process of perfume bottles, cases, and packaging – it’s a scary thought! Thankfully, with thanks to the Mugler Source, it’s estimated that up to 383 tonnes of waste are spared each year, and that roughly 2,3 million bottles and cases are saved each year. Just one more reason why I’m happy to claim Angel as my signature fragrance, and will continue to spritz Mugler’s fragrances for years to come. (It also makes my minimalist heart happy – now I don’t have to panic about what to do with my empty bottles, I can simply refill them!)
Thierry Mugler is the only brand to offer this bespoke service in South Africa at the moment, but I truly hope that other brands will follow suit – and soon. It’s such a treat to be able to walk into a store and have your bottle refilled by a professional fragrance consultant; you’ll even have your bottle polished to make the experience even more special. I popped into Foschini at Somerset Mall to have my bottle refilled just last week, and I share a bit more about my experience in the video below – give it a quick watch and let me know what you think!
As I mentioned in my video above, Thierry Mugler also offers eco-refills so that you can refill your own bottle at home if you’re unable to get to the Mugler Source. I decided to go with this option to refill my empty Alien bottle. Each eco-refill comes in recyclable packaging, along with a beautiful, golden funnel to help you refill your empty Alien bottle. The packaging is very simple and pared down, once again saving on the cost of bottles and cases, and reducing waste at the same time.
How gorgeous is that golden funnel?! What’s more, you’ll end up saving roughly R200 when you purchase an eco-refill. To give you an idea of exactly what you’ll be saving when opting to fill up your empty bottle using an eco-refill:
- Thierry Mugler Angel EDP Refillable Star – R1,270 for 50ml
- Thierry Mugler Angel EDP Eco-Refill – R1,060 for 50ml
- Thierry Mugler Alien EDP Refillable Stone – R1,565 for 90ml
- Thierry Mugler Alien EDP Eco-Refill – R1,330 for 90ml
- Thierry Mugler Womanity EDP Refillable – R1,185 for 80ml
- Thierry Mugler Womanity EDP Eco-Refill – R950 for 80ml
Overall, I think this is a brilliant concept and I definitely think that Thierry Mugler is ahead of the pack with this economical, environmentally responsible way of wearing your favourite fragrance. The fact that one Thierry Mugler refill is performed at the Mugler Source every 7 seconds is further proof that consumers everywhere are on board with this idea. Responsible luxury at it’s best!
Are you a Thierry Mugler fan and, if so, have you ever had your favourite fragrance refilled – either at the Mugler Source or at home – before?
