Dermalogica Daily Superfoliant

Dermalogica Daily Superfoliant – is it any good?

I’ve been using Dermalogica’s iconic Daily Microfoliant for as long as I can remember, so when I heard that Dermalogica was launching a super-amped up version of my beloved Daily Microfoliant – very aptly called Daily Superfoliant – I couldn’t  wait to get my hands on it.

Like Daily Microfoliant, Dermalogica Daily Superfoliant offers your skin a deep-cleansing exfoliation, but with one big difference: Daily Superfoliant has a slightly higher pH, which opens up your pores and allows the activated Binchotan charcoal to penetrate deeper, where it helps to absorb pesky pollution particles lodged in the skin. Oh, and did I mention that it’s grey?!

I’ve been using Dermalogica Daily Superfoliant every second or third day since we moved to Johannesburg over a month ago, and it’s done my skin the world of good. It’s no secret that certain environmental triggers (think pollution and sun exposure) can result in premature ageing, and this little beauty helps to absorb said environmental pollutants while detoxifying your pores – something that I think is vital when you’re living in a city like Jo’burg.

The advanced powder formula contains activated Binchotan charcoal to purify your skin while extracting dirt and oil, along with anti-inflammatory niacinamide, lactic acid (to slough off dead skin cells), and rice bran, which gives the grey powder it’s grit. The powder is activated upon contact with water, creating a rich, foamy paste that you massage into skin using circular motions, before rinsing to reveal a beautifully glowing complexion.

I like that you can customise this exfoliator to suit your own, individual needs – add just a drop or two of water to about a teaspoon-full of the powder for a thick, gritty scrub, or add even more water if you prefer a gentler scrub. Either way, you’re getting a double buff-and-polish: the rice bran in the formula gives your skin a gentle, physical scrub, while the chemical exfoliants contained in the powder (like lactic acid) help to gently and effectively dissolve debris and dead skin cells. It’s a win-win!

Dermalogica claims that the Daily Superfoliant is gentle enough to use on a daily basis, but I’ve found that using it more than two or three times per week is a little too harsh for my skin. If you have a more sensitive skin type (or if you skin is prone to irritation, like mine), I highly recommend that you stick to using Dermalogica’s Daily Superfoliant on alternate days.

TIP: I particularly love using my Dermalogica Daily Superfoliant on days when I’ve spent a lot of time in traffic and I can feel the highway pollution seeping into my pores, or after a flight. I find it works a treat on dry, dehydrated, post-plane skin!
