With Valentine’s Day coming up soon, it seems that just about everyone is searching for the perfect Valentine’s Day gift for their loved one. The Husband and I don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day, so although we may go out for dinner, we don’t often buy each other gifts.
That said, I always get Beanie a little something, and I’m pretty big on showing myself some self-love – especially on Valentine’s Day. This little tradition stems from my varsity years, when I wasn’t in a serious relationship and spent every Valentine’s Day feeling alone and unloved. After one particularly low Valentine’s Day, I decided to turn things around and to make Valentine’s Day all about me – whether I was loved up or not. Since then, I’ve treated myself to all manner of things come Valentine’s Day – from a new set of fancy bed linen to a simple bunch of flowers, regardless of my budget, I make sure that I do something to show myself some love. One of my favourite gifts to me, from me? A bottle of my favourite fragrance. There’s nothing I love more than browsing the aisles of Red Square, sniffing an assortment of beautiful perfumes, and choosing one that really speaks to me. Although I already have a pretty decent fragrance collection (and some would say that I don’t need another perfume), I truly believe that a woman can never have too many scents!
If you have similar beliefs and you’re looking for a really special something to spoil yourself with this Valentine’s Day, I highly recommend that you give Chanel’s newest fragrance, Gabrielle, a go. I’m a big fan of anything Chanel so I knew that I would enjoy this fragrance, but I honestly didn’t expect to love this clean and modern fragrance as much as I do.
I’ve been wearing it on an almost-daily basis ever since I got my hands on it about three months ago (and I’m happy to report that the flacon is still just over half-full). I say ‘almost-daily’ because I actually stop myself from spritzing it on some days, because I don’t want to get bored of it (I don’t think that’s possibly, though, to be honest…) and I definitely don’t want to finish my bottle any time soon. We still have so many date nights and adventures to go on together!
One thing that really struck me about this fragrance when I first held it was how light and delicate the flacon felt: in fact, this bottle boasts the thinnest and finest glass walls to date, and you’ll notice that it has an extremely thin base – unlike the thick, solid base that’s so typical of other perfume bottles. Designed specifically with the intention to showcase what’s inside (because, at Chanel, what’s inside is considered to be just as important as what’s on the outside; if not more so), the bottle design took several years to perfect – and boy, is it a thing of beauty!
But if you think that it’s gorgeous to look at, just wait until you get a whiff of what’s in the inside! With fresh, modern top notes of grapefruit, mandarin, and black currant, Chanel Gabrielle is unlike any other Chanel fragrance I’ve tried before. Although it bares a striking resemblance to the original Chanel No. 5, it feels a whole lot fresher and younger, and it’s much more wearable, in my opinion. I absolutely love Chanel No. 5 but find that I can’t wear it – it’s simply too overpowering. Gabrielle feels more contemporary, while still remaining a classic. Like a classic for a new generation of Chanel addicts, like me!
The fresh, fruity top notes soon settle to reveal the exquisite heart made up of all the white floral varieties used in the history of Chanel fragrances: think tuberose, jasmine, ylang-ylang, and orange blossom. The creaminess you’ll detect after a couple of hours of wearing the scent is with thanks to the delicate sandalwood and musk notes at the base. It’s a beautifully sophisticated scent that will appeal to women of all ages and is set to become yet another die-hard classic, just like Chanel No. 5 before it.
I’m a big fan of fresh, fruity fragrances, so I love that the grapefruit notes seem particularly strong when I wear this scent. It’s just the right amount of zestiness for an everyday scent, while still remaining elegant and deeply sensual. It’s my go-to fragrance for when I need a little pick me up, and it holds a really special place in my heart – and on my dressing table!
Chanel Gabrielle is currently on counter and retails at R2 565 for 100ml.
