I’m a big fan of creating little routines and rituals to help transform mundane moments into something a little more special…
… think spritzing a really soothing linen spray onto your pillow before hopping into bed, making a cup of coffee and lighting a scented candle before settling down to work, or popping in some earbuds and listening to your favourite songs or a podcast while hanging up the laundry.
Although I’ve managed to create quite an indepth night-time routine that helps me to unwind after a long day of working and momming, I still haven’t quite found my groove when it comes to my morning routine. Some days are better than others, but I think it’s safe to say that I’m definitely more of a night owl than an early bird!
With that in mind, I wanted to share one of my most treasured routines… it may seem silly to some, but I really relish the opportunity to take off the day’s makeup and apply an array of sweet-smelling lotions, oils, and potions to my skin as I prepare for bed.
I’ve been using three exquisite skincare products over the past month or so, and I really wanted to share them with you as I’m enjoying using them so much. Each one works it’s own special kind of magic, and the three combined leave my skin looking (and feeling) a million times better upon waking… regardless of how many hours of sleep I’ve managed to squeeze in!
I usually start off my routine by applying the new Skinceuticals Glycolic 10 Renew Overnight Nightly Treatment (R1 528) to freshly cleansed skin. I’ve been using quite a few Skinceuticals products in recent months (particularly in the mornings – more info to come), and their products have honestly changed my skin for the better. Their products are on the pricier side, but considering the fact that they actually deliver real results, I really do believe that it’s worth it.
The minute I first heard about Skinceuticals Glycolic 10 Renew Overnight Nightly Treatment, I knew I had to try it. As someone who battles with hormonal breakouts and pigmentation, the promise to reduce the appearance of an uneven skin tone sold me on this product.
It contains a potent blend of 10% glycolic acid and 2% phytic acid, which promotes cell turnover while boosting your skin’s clarity and radiance. This rather powerful nightly treatment may be a bit too potent for sensitive skins, so you may want to start introducing it into your beauty routine sloooowly. (I started using it every other night for the first week or so, but didn’t notice any adverse reactions so started using it nightly soon afterwards). It’s a no-go for those with rosacea.
After a solid four weeks of use, I’ve found that my skin is a whole lot brighter and more glowy, and I’m not breaking out nearly as often as usual. Although my dark spots and pigmentation are still there (treating pigmentation is a long-term commitment), I definitely feel that they’re less noticeable. I’m still not comfortable enough to go out into public without foundation, but I have found myself skipping my full-coverage foundation in favour of a BB cream in the last couple of weeks. Winning!
Before using a powerful, exfoliating product like Glycolic 10, I always make sure that I have a super-nourishing oil or cream on hand to help counteract any dryness that may result from the product’s peeling power. I’ve had local lovely City Girl Beauty Sleep Serum (R100) in my beauty cabinet for a good few months now, and thought that this was the perfect opportunity to try this gorgeously unfussy facial serum. Made using 100% natural and locally sourced carrier and essential oils, this beautiful sleep-in oil nourishes and hydrates thirsty skin, while calming the senses at the same time.
Even though I know that the belief that beauty oils are bad for oilier skin types is a big, fat myth, I still found myself stressing that this oil would be too rich for my skin and that it would lead to breakouts. I needn’t have worried: It simply sinks into my skin without leaving it feeling greasy, and I find that my skin is beautifully plump and radiant upon waking the next morning. (The soothing lavender scent is also a real treat and is a great way to signal to your brain that it’s time to switch off…)
Oh, and did I mention that it’s both cruelty-free and vegan-friendly?
The final step in my night-time beauty routine is certainly my favourite, and it has a whole little ritual of its own. I usually complete the first two steps of my night-time routine (as described above) straight after my bath or shower, and before settling in front of the telly to watch the latest episode of Love Island. This is usually a good two or three hours before I actually go to bed, which is when I apply Dermalogica’s new Sound Sleep Cocoon Transformative Night Gel-Cream (R1295).
Applying this night cream isn’t as straight-forward as slapping it on before turning out the lights, though. Dermalogica has actually developed their unique DIY Deep Sleep Massage (watch the video here), which was designed to help release the encapsulated, motion-activated French-lavender essential oil while helping to calm you in preparation for a restful night’s sleep. It may all be in my head, but I find that doing this every night really helps me to drift off quicker than I ordinarily would – I think it just assists me in calming down and quietening my mind, so that I’m better able to switch off.
Apart from it’s incredibly soothing properties, Dermalogica’s Sound Sleep Cocoon also has a number of benefits for your skin: it contains Tamarind Seed Extract to help promote your skin’s natural hydration process (perfect for winter), while Persian silk-tree extract reduces the signs of fatigue (ideal for new moms who aren’t getting much sleep to begin with). It also contains Wu-Zhu-Yu extract for visibly brighter and more radiant skin by morning.
For me, skincare and bathing rituals form a huge part of my self-care routine; if you’re the same, I highly recommend that you try this indulgent little night-time ritual. Likewise if you’re battling with an uneven complexion that looks tired, dull, and a little worse-for-wear. I can guarantee that this lovely little lineup will sort you right out!
It may seem like such a silly thing, but I’ve found such immense comfort from following this simple little routine every evening. It’s definitely helped me through a rather stressful period in my life, and although it hasn’t quite solved any issues (other than give me brighter, clearer skin), it has provided proof that sometimes the littlest, simplest things really can bring you joy.
