Who will you make happy today?

Who will you make happy today?

It’s no secret that the last few months of 2017 and the first half of this year were very hard for my family and I, but despite these difficulties, I’ve learnt some incredibly valuable lessons about what truly constitutes happiness.

During countless house moves, financial difficulties, the death of my beloved Oupa, and relationship hardships, I came to realise that life isn’t always sunshine and daisies – but my eyes were opened to what really matters most in life and it’s a lesson that I’ll forever be grateful for. There were a handful of key people in my life that offered their unwavering love and support during some of the most difficult times, and one of those people was my grandmother, who continued to listen, shared her wisdom, cried for me, and prayed for me – despite the fact that she was going through a tough time herself!

She reminded me of what unconditional love really looks and feels like, and I left my grandparents’ house feeling instantly lighter and happier after every visit. Our year of living on Jo’burg brought me infinitely closer to my Granny and I’ll always be grateful for this time, which allowed our bond to grow and deepen even further. We spent hours talking about our marriages and our children, and I learnt so much from her as she relayed tales from her younger years. I’d never really stopped to think about what she might have been like as a young girl (she was a chatterbox at school and often got sent to the principal’s office), as a young woman, as a mom, or as a wife. I realised that my Granny and I have a lot more in common than I thought, and I learnt valuable lessons with each conversation we shared.

I feel so much gratitude towards my Granny and we have so many shared happy memories that I didn’t think twice when Lancôme contacted me to participate in their new global campaign and challenged me to #MakeSomeoneHappy. After all, happiness is most fulfilling when shared with someone else… right?

Lancôme sent me not one, but two bottles of their iconic fragrance, La Ve Est Belle Eau De Parfum, with one caveat: I was to share happiness by gifting the second bottle to someone else. It was a no-brainer: I would send the second fragrance to my Granny, all the way in Pretoria, as a gesture of love and to bring a little bit of joy to her every day. (My Granny, like me, is a fan of lotions, potions, and sweet-smelling things, so I knew that this bottle of perfume would be so appreciated – especially since she’s not typically one to go out and spoil herself to a new fragrance!)

Lancôme La Vie Est Belle Eau De Parfum (R1 440 for 50ml) is one of my favourite fragrances, and it’s one that I’ve gifted to countless friends and family members over the years for that very reason. It’s a beautifully feminine and radiant scent that turns heads without being too over-powering (it’s the one fragrance that I always get complimented on), and I just know that my Granny will appreciate the elegant notes of Iris Pallida, Jasmine Sambac, Orange Blossom and Patchouli Essence as much as I do.

This sweet, simple act not only encouraged me to reflect on my love and gratitude for my grandmother, but also reminded me of the power of a random act of kindness. I got such a thrill from gifting my Granny with this fragrance, that I decided to gift the other bottle to someone equally deserving: my sister-in-law, Barbara. Barbara is one of the strongest, kindest, and most giving women that I’ve ever met, and not a day goes by where I don’t see her smiling. La Vie Est Belle is best described as happiness in a bottle, which is why I think it’s the perfect fragrance for Barbara.

Here are a few ideas for random acts of kindness that you can do today, to help brighten someone else’s day (and make you feel happier, too!)

  1. Bake biscuits (or buy them from Woolies!) and pop by your neighbours to say hello and give them some fresh bakes for tea time.
  2. Leave a R10 note taped to the parking machine for the next person.
  3. Stick a note with a compliment on the bathroom mirror at your office, or tuck it into someone’s windshield wiper.
  4. Buy an unexpected bunch of flowers for your mom, your sister, or your best friend (or all three!)
  5. Smile at every stranger you walk past today.
  6. Compliment the cashier when buying your groceries.
  7. Buy the car guard a bottle of water and a sandwich.
  8. Offer to babysit your bestie’s little ones for an hour or two so that she can get some much-needed time off.
  9. Fill up your partner’s car (or have it washed) next time you use their car.
  10. Send someone an iTunes voucher for no reason.

The only question left to ask is: who will you make happy today?
