A big focus for me this past year was self-care – and I suspect I’m not alone in this. Self-care seems to have been the buzzword for 2019, with sheet-mask-selfies and bath-bomb-baths filling my Instagram feed.
Sure, self-care is so much more than bubble baths and face masks, but there’s no denying the power of little luxuries – think a luxurious body oil or a fancy scented candle and you’re on the right track. A small indulgence like this can instantly uplift your mood, and make a dull, dreary day seem instantly brighter. That’s why, this year, I’ve gone to the effort to pick out gifts that will allow those closest to me to show themselves a little self-care long after Christmas day is over. Read on for a handful of my favourite finds (which would make great birthday or Valentine’s Day gifts, too)…
Seriously spoil-worthy skincare
A beautiful body oil or pampering lotion is always a good idea – especially when it’s locally-made, cruelty-free, and comes housed in gorgeous packaging. One of my favourite discoveries of 2019 is Suki Suki Naturals – an exquisite, proudly South African skincare line that makes use of natural ingredients and is now available at your nearest Woolies store (you’ll also find them online, here).
Suki Suki Naturals Rosehip Brightening Facial Oil (R395) is an easily-absorbed facial oil that’s suitable for all skin types, and is particularly handy during the summer months as it’s rich in antioxidants (useful for fighting off damaging free radicals as a result of the sun’s rays). It brightens up a dull complexion and leaves your skin feeling well-moisturized, without any stickiness or greasy residue.
Suki Suki Naturals Papaya Rose Hydrating Facial Mist (R295) is another summer essential – a quick spritz over sun-kissed skin leaves your feeling instantly cooler and more refreshed. It contains rose water to tone and hydrate your skin, along with aloe vera to soothe your skin and neutralize free radicals.
A signature scent – with a difference
When it comes to picking presents, there simply is no better gift than a much-coveted fragrance. Take things one step further with new Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse Florale Multi-Purpose Dry Oil for Face, Body, Hair (R495), which moisturises both skin and hair while leaving a glamorous sheen and a beautiful scent lingering on the skin.
It boasts the same nourishing and repairing formula as the original and iconic Huile Prodigieuse, only with an exquisite new fragrance created by Irène Farmachidi and featuring notes of blossoming magnolia, seductive white musks, and crisp top notes of grapefruit, lemon, orange, and Calabrian Bergamot. I can’t imagine a woman that wouldn’t delight in finding this beauty underneath the tree come Christmas day!
Beautiful lingerie – with all of the frills!
I don’t know about you, but when I go shopping for underwear, I rarely come home with anything that isn’t basic black or good ol’ sensible nude – but there’s no denying the impact that beautiful lingerie has on your confidence!
I’ve found some of the prettiest pairs of panties and matching bras at Cotton On Body – including this stunning dusty pink set, which I bought online via Superbalist. Best of all? They’re reasonably priced and come in a wide range of sizes and styles, to suit just about every body and budget!
Essential oils and a diffuser
Essential oils are having a moment (read more about how I use essential oils, here) and it seems like just about everyone is mixing their own essentials oil blends or diffusing some sort of blend – and since getting my hands on the SOiL Ultrasonic Aroma Diffuser (R600), I completely understand the craze. Simply add a few drops of your chosen essential oil or essential oil blend to your diffuser (along with at least 200mls of water) and ultrasonic vibrations will disperse the molecules of the essential oil into the air via a fine, cool mist.
I’ve been diffusing SOiL Organic Lavender Essential Oil every night before bed, and I find that it’s been a complete game-changer when it comes to calming Bean for bedtime. I’m also a fan of Bug Away (R60), which is ace at keeping mozzies and other insects at bay, with none of the nasty chemicals you’ve come to expect from other insect repellants.
Ok, so a pair of running shoes might not seem like a gift relating to self-care, but hear me out: it’s been a tough year, and I’ve found that the one thing that’s kept me sane throughout it all has been exercise – be it an evening stroll around Greyton, a run on one of the mountain trails, or an hour-long yoga class at my local studio.
Thing is, most of my exercise gear is old and worn, and I’ve found that there’s nothing quite like a new pair of running shoes or stylish leggings to motivate me to get out there are work out. These Nike Renew Arena Women’s running shoes (R769) are not only good looking, but they offer plenty of support and breathability with Nike Renew technology for a smooth, soft, and stable ride. Superbalist have a wide selection of Nike running shoes to choose from, with plenty of styles on sale too! Click here to view the full selection.
These are just a few of my favourite ideas for gifts that focus on self-care, but there are loads of other options – from spa vouchers and bath bombs to fancy chocolate bars or a wine tasting at a beautiful wine estate.
What are some of your suggestions for gifts centered around self-care… and is there something specific you’re hoping to see beneath the Christmas tree this year?
